Hoptree Genus Details
Hoptree is an aromatic shrub or small tree with a rounded crown. It can grow to 20' tall. The bark is brownish gray and the flowers are 3/8" wide with 4-5 narrow greenish white petals. The fruit is 7/8" in diameter, disk-shaped and wafer-like with rounded wings. Hoptree is found in dry rocky uplands along the eastern half of the U.S. The name hoptree refers to a reported use in early days of the bitter fruit as a substitute for hops in brewing beer.
